Real cup was already won

by Kate Kennedy

A Flames fan shares what it was like on a night at a pub in Calgary

Out the corner of my eye, I saw something waving from the stage at the front of Woody's. Someone had unfurled a huge Canadian flag.

What's got into them?

by Kevin Potvin

IN
CONTEXT

The police, like all groups visible to the public, wish to be careful about managing their public image and countering those who would smear it. But when they deploy themselves in force in doing so, they have abused the institution of the police.

Fire and distraction

by James Lindfield

European countries have already successfully engaged in rapid reductions in their carbon emissions, and are reaping economic rewards for doing so. Canada should join them.

"Why doesn't anyone do anything?"

by Chris LaVigne

That's what a Palestinian asked a Canadian last year. It's a good question.

"I can't sit here anymore and watch these kinds of things happen. I have to be a part of doing something against it because it's out of control and it's disgusting."

Superman and American imperialism

by Michael Nenonen

POLITICAL SOUL

The roots of the American urge to global dominance also feed Americans' insatiable appetite for comic book heroes.

For a lot of American boys, superheroes are the default role models of choice, and these caricatures of power, majesty, and virtue continue inspiring them long after they grow up.

Abizaid's conundrum

by William Kay

The practical reality of what the Coalition is able to field and what the Iraqi insurgency is able to field is tipping the balance against the Americans, with ominous outcomes looming

At the lower end of this participation scale, Abizaid is merely confronting an insuppressible guerrilla army. At the higher end, the US forces become the guerrillas.

Idle America

by Jennifer Matsui

REP SHEET

American Idol illustrates the depths to which cultural production in America has fallen, while its been in the hands of corporatists

Americans have super-sized their appetites for wholesome divas in provocative prom attire, whose vocal style could be best described as what happens when you try to recite a Hallmark greeting card after gargling with "Draino."

Is this any way to build a city?

by Kevin Potvin

THE BUSINESS

A new community center development at Kingsway and 7th is a singular disaster of missed opportunity. This is how cities get ugly.

City invites even more cars

by Kevin Potvin

A city-owned development adds 200 new parking spots to our already bloated inventory. Why should private developers behave any differently?

Watch for more from BEST

by Matthew Burrows

OOT & ABOOT

An annual celebration of alternative transport has grown up from a "Yeah whatever" to a "Pedal Power" juggernaut

Battling avian flu and the government

by Patty Ducharme

While they were doing the dirty work of containing a serious threat to our food supply, workers at the food inspection agency were simultaneously dealing with an employer seeking effective pay cuts

Fringe votes count the most

VIEW
FROM THE REPUBLIC

Most media treat them as inscrutable mistakes, but smart party campaigners should realize that sizable votes for fringe candidates may hold the key to overall victory, and should look closely at them

They ought to look at all those votes cast to fringe candidates, and calculate that those votes were won at virtually no cost, compared to the costs all the parties incurred in a losing effort to win them.
