What a strange little war it is
What does winning the war in Afghanistan mean?

Dear politicians and members of the press: With all due respect, just how stupid are we really being here? I have heard so much recently about establishing timelines and benchmarks for progress in our war in Afghanistan and it seems to me very strange that Canada is just apparently thinking about this now. It has after all been five years or so. I have a question: How will we know when we have won this war? What are the victory criteria? Unconditional surrender? By whom? To whom? Fundamental orthodox religion (the Taliban) surrendering to fundamental orthodox religion (Christianity)? Al Quaida surrendering? Regional Afghani poppy-growing warlords surrendering? And this is just in Afghanistan. How about the rest of the world? What are we going to do, go around killing all the fundamentally-orthodox religiously-inspired people in all the countries of the world who believe that military wars or the use of violence on any people (except themselves, of course) solve problems? How hypocritical is that? And even if it does change things what kind of people will eventually take over after we leave? Answer: Probably just the same kind of people who were there in the first place or worse. This is actually what has happened in Afghanistan (and earlier in Cambodia and Viet Nam). Remember: The Taliban couldn't have gained so much power in the first place if the Americans hadn't used them against the Russians. So what chance does change of any really significant kind really have of happening unless the people themselves are that change? Are we really fighting to change things, or are we only fighting to punish? And if we are fighting to punish, then who are we really punishing? Answer: The ordinary, common citizens, not the terrorists. It seems to me that punishing ordinary, common citizens just creates more terrorists, so the more we use terrorist methods, the more terrorists we create. This isn't really a war on terror. This is a war of terror.
