The Greatest Portuguese, Not!
A vote in Portugal elevates an odd choice among so many other deserving greats

A short time ago, "RTP,” the Portuguese equivalent to the CBC, had the Portuguese version of the "Greatest Canadian.”
It was with great sadness and frustration that I saw Antonio Oliveira Salazar out ahead with 41% of the total votes. To quote a British tabloid on the re-election of George Bush, how could so many people have been so stupid?
Salazar was a fascist dictator who ruled with an iron fist for more than 30 years. Along with Franco from Spain he was responsible for so many good people ending up in jail (my father included), and I might add with the support of the United States!
It wasn't that there were no other choices, like: Alvaro Cunhal, the leader of the Portuguese Communist Party, and Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a Portuguese consul in Bordeaux who saved thousands of Jews and at the same time damming himself and his family for his actions by the same Salazar. Others that received votes but did not make the mark include Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, Louis de Camoes, Portugal's epic poet, Fernando Pessoa, a great poet of the early 20th century, and finally Vasco da Gama and Infante D Henrique, responsible for the great voyages of discovery.
I can't understand how a generation can develop such a short memory. This evil man was responsible for the great exodus of people from the mainland to the Azores, scattering people all over the world and breaking up families.
I know of what I speak because I was part of it. I usually don't wish ill on any one, but this time I pray that he is burning in hell along with his buddies, Hitler, Franco and Mussolini. I hope the new generation in Portugal gives their head a shake and reflect on the suffering caused by Salazar in the not-too-distant past.
