The Republic of East Vancouver Q2 – 2008 report
In the fiscal quarter between March 1, 2007 and June 1, 2007, 42,000 copies of The Republic were printed in seven different issues.
Of those, 36,649 were distributed to 71 different sites around Vancouver, 3,640 were distributed to sites elsewhere in British Columbia and Canada, 1,575 were shipped to subscribers, and 140 were retained for the archives.
Of the copies distributed, 6,396 were left behind and later disposed of.
Therefore, 84.8% of the 42,000 copies of The Republic printed in the last three months found their way into someone’s hands.
Commercial Drive remains the key distribution area, accounting for 35% of copies distributed to 26 locations at an average of 70 copies each. The west end and Kits account for 29% of copies distributed to 21 locations; Main and Cambie Streets account for 20% of copies at 21 locations; and downtown accounts for 16% of copies at 11 locations. There is now a total of 79 locations The Republic is distributed at around Vancouver, and 22 locations outside Vancouver, for a total of 101 locations.
The most popular locations are the Vancouver Public Library, main branch, where 400 copies are distributed, Uprising Bakery, the central Bus Depot, and Magpie Magazine Gallery, where each get 300 copies, and the Granville Island Public Market and UBC Student Union building, where each get 200 copies.

Jailed activist Betty Krawczyk interviews Devon Macdonald, 23, single mother of nine-month-old Dallas, while inside Alouette Correctional Centre for Women in Maple Ridge, BC:
Betty K: Devon, were you incarcerated for most of your pregnancy?
Devon M: I spent six months in Surrey Pre-Trial.
Betty K: That must have been hell for you.
Devon M: Yes, it was very scary and stressful
Betty K: Can you elaborate?
Devon M: It was my first time in jail, I was locked down for 16 hours a day. I was only allowed one hour a day outside. And that was onto a cement court.
Betty K: So much for the province's pre-natal care of incarcerated women. Did you have any pre-natal care at all while you were at Surrey Pre-Trial?
Devon M: Yes, but I was four months pregnant by the time I got pre-natal care or vitamins.
Betty K: But here at Alouette now, you have your baby with you. How would you describe what it's like rearing your child in prison?
Devon M: Well, I believe the mother-baby program here at Alouette is a step in the right direction. At least my baby is with me, but I think there are better alternatives for mothers in my situation.
Betty K: Such as?
Devon M: Well, programs in the community that allow mothers to learn skills such as budgeting, preparing nutritious foods, and how to take advantage of community resources.
Betty K: How much more time in prison are you looking at now?
Devon M: Potentially another year.
Betty K: And would you like letters from the community at large?
Devon M: Yes, mail really helps to keep me connected with the outside world.
