Dear Republic:
I thoroughly enjoyed your April 26 issue [issue 162]. Let's face it, the poodle journalists and editors are worried for a number of reasons. More and more young people are finding that alternatives are not only cheaper but also far more interesting and varied. The writers for the alternatives don't have to worry about being fired by their bosses (whose numbers are dwindling while their empires are ballooning—wait for the needle ) for writing the wrong stuff. I have recently seen huge adverts placed by the World Association of Newspapers, suggesting that newspapers are not an endangered species, a quote from the Economist.

Dear Republic:
Re “J'Accuse...!” issue 162:
In dumping you as a candidate—in fact, by disowning and disavowing you—Elizabeth May and The Green Party of Canada have shown they don't have a radical bone left in their body politic. Which is the real problem with the Greens: the true environmental movement has left them far, far behind. The Green Party has been so preoccupied with trying to look respectable and electable, they have become completely bland. They don't deserve you. Let them chase the suits and ties and the drivers of those shiny, new hybrid SUVs. The Greens have lost their way, their purpose, and their base.
And don't feel you have to clarify, apologize or backtrack. The alternative press does matter, as you have so ably demonstrated. Thank you.

Dear Republic: v
I was very upset reading your article "They All Turtle on the Environment and War" (issue 163). The way you have been treated is shameful, hypocritical, and dishonest.
In general, I have been upset by the hard line, knee jerk reaction to you not just in the media, but from the Green Party of Canada. I think you expressed yourself honestly and with sincere good intent, and you do not deserve to be treated so unequivocally.
I would like to share my own perspective on the events of 9/11. I first heard of the plane hitting the World Trade Center from my partner, who had just turned on the morning news. We watched on TV as the spectacle unfolded. My feelings were of excitement, suspense, and awe. It was like watching a Hollywood movie. When we see things like that on TV, they are so far out of the realm of everyday experience that it is impossible to take it in as reality.
And I will say that I very much doubt that the first thing that went through most people's minds was "Oh, the humanity!!" No. Nobody knew what was going on. But as more information came in, and the story of how a small group of men, armed only with box cutters, could so effectively destroy a major symbol of US imperialism became known, I too cheered. As one would cheer when the underdog triumphs in any number of blockbuster action films.
And then later, the tragic stories of all the lives lost were told, and I could feel quite a shift in public opinion as people struggled to process the event in their minds. And George Bush said, "If you're not for us, you're against us," rendering any further discussion of the complexities of feeling in the situation suspect. There was only one reaction we were allowed to have—dismay, horror, and desire for retaliation.
But I know that on the morning of September 11, 2001, I went to work and people expressed all kinds of reactions. There were lots of jokes, there was worry about bombs falling in our own back yards, there was frustration because all flights were cancelled and we weren't getting our deliveries. But there was very little sanctimonious concern for the people in the towers or the planes. That came later.
I believe you are being scapegoated here, Kevin. If people were honest with themselves, they would have to admit that they shared some of the feelings you expressed in your article. But they can't admit to it, and they transfer their guilty feelings onto you.
I wish you the best. I admire your strength and honesty.

The Republic of East Vancouver masthead
The Republic of East Vancouver supports no party, advocates
for no cause, represents no group, serves no master, and considers
problems with no preconceived notions. We hope to afflict the comfortable,
both materially and intellectually, and comfort the afflicted—of
both kinds as well, and we are trying to do both things at the same
time.
