Thank you Nenonen

Dear Republic:

Thank you to Michael Nenonen and The Republic for helping to keep the issue of the ritual abuse panic in the public eye, and for explaining how and why the ritual abuse fairy-tale came to be accepted by so many people, including police officers and social workers ("The Rise, Fall, and Rise Again of Satan," issue 159).

Nenonen correctly notes that "thanks to incompetent investigations and credulous courts, hundreds of people, many of whom worked in daycares, were falsely imprisoned, while countless others were slandered . . . most of the convictions were overturned." Most, but not all.

At least a dozen people are still in prison today because of bizarre and improbable allegations of ritual abuse against children. They are serving lengthy prison sentences for crimes taken right out of the Salem Witch Trials. Joseph Allen in Ohio will not come up for parole until the year 2058. His co-accused, Nancy Smith, is a single mother who was taken away from her four children on the basis of accusations with no evidence whatsoever. Robert Halsey, a bus driver in Massachusetts, has exhausted his appeals and will probably die in prison. For these people, the ritual abuse panic has not ended.

The National Center for Reason and Justice advocates and raises funds for Smith, Allen and Halsey and other similar cases. The NCRJ board includes lawyers, journalists, scholars and academics dedicated to correcting this terrible miscarriage of justice. Their website is at ncrj.org.
