Dear Republic
Readers have their say
|
Dear Republic:
It was with great pleasure I read Mr Reed Eurchuk’s objective analysis of the true state of affairs in Israel [Inside Israel’s apartheid state, issue 157].
I await with great anticipation his next editorial, wherein he will describe Arab atrocities against Arabs, Jews and non-Jews throughout the world. Your reading public will no doubt be enthralled with insights into Arab honor killings, present day slavery, the “Apartheid” state of Saudi Arabia, Iran’s brutal treatment of members of the Ba’hai faith etc, public beheadings and limb amputations, plus, to top it all off, the Arab religion of Islam, which teaches Muslims are superior to all others, including both you (editor of The Republic) Mr Potvin and Mr Eurchuk.
Oh yes, there’s also that nasty little event wherein Jordan’s King Hussein wiped out 8,000 members of the so-called PLO, whereafter they fled to Lebanon and raise hell there to this day. And what about how Hamas was established by the Muslim Brotherhood which was founded by the Nazis and responsible for the assassination of Anwar Sadat?
There’s just so much to write about if one has the intelligence, integrity, and courage. Why, you can almost publish anything you wish about Jews and Israelis, for which they’ll likely write you a nasty letter, rather than riot in the streets and murder people. But hey, I suppose truth is more obvious these days in editorial omissions than in emissions.
—Eliezer
Dear Republic:
I am writing to thank you for publishing the article Inside Israel’s apartheid state [issue 157].
Mr Eurchuk’s article is about as pithy as it gets, and I can only wish that this were required reading in the Zionist States of America. I like very much that the language of the article, unlike, for instance, Jimmy Carter’s latest book, does not mince words about the revolting racism and heinous genocidal actions of the Israeli “state” occupying Palestine. The only minor addition I would like to have seen, since Mr Eurchuk “tells it like it is,” is that the Israeli “state” was, in fact, illegally created, and, unlike the prevailing propaganda to the contrary, that “state” does not “have a right to exist.” This fact is often obscured in the thunder and fury of Israeli fascism, and the domination of world politics, economics, and “foreign policy” by Zionist forces.
—Victor Whitmore
Dear Republic:
I’m writing this because I take a great offence to the article on Israel written by Reed Eurchuk.
Where do you guys get off printing things with no factual basis?
I can just as easily do some internet searches and find lots of biased opinions about publisher Kevin Potvin and others from your paper, but putting them on paper is simply irresponsible. You feel that is OK to do, though.
Why not go to Israel and speak directly with people from both sides? Would that not be the unbiased thing to do, since you claim many times that is the point of journalism?
You are simply feeding the neo-Nazi behaviour that is continuing to surface around the world. If people were in Canada that had a mission to destroy the WASPS of this country, what would you say then?
—Alex Goldkind
Dear Republic:
I refer to your front-page story on Carnegie Centre [104 years at Main and Hastings, issue 156]. Tavis Dodds cites five incidents that he says made him think about the meaning of community. He doesn’t mention that those incidents occurred over a five-year span. Nor that every day of the year, about 2,000 people come through the doors of Carnegie to take part in one program or another. In five years, that would amount to 2,190,000 people. Those incidents reported represent some microscopically small proportion of all the interactions at Carnegie, something like 1 in 400,000.
Dodds also neglects to mention that there is an admission policy put in place with the involvement of the Carnegie community for the safety, comfort, and peace-of-mind of all those thousands of people. I’ll leave aside whether his five incidents were even reported accurately—a dubious proposition since your reporter only talked to a tiny slice of the community.
The meaning of community? A little balance please.
—Bob Sarti, Hornby Island, BC (a former member of the Carnegie Community Centre Association Board)
Stop the presses!
An enterprising opposition finance critic might read the independent audit of the BC Rail deal, the part where the merit of moving $2 billion in un-used tax loss and depreciation credits to the buyer for $250 million could not be assessed because of lack of information provided by . . . Gary Collins, then-BC Minister of Finance and subject of police stake-outs during meetings with potential buyers at cozy downtown restaurants. |

The Republic of East Vancouver masthead
The Republic of East Vancouver supports no party, advocates
for no cause, represents no group, serves no master, and considers
problems with no preconceived notions. We hope to afflict the comfortable,
both materially and intellectually, and comfort the afflicted—of
both kinds as well, and we are trying to do both things at the same
time.
