Want to do something to get involved in the Mother of All Battles against the expansion of Highway One and the doubling of the Port Mann Bridge? Kevin Potvin will be conducting a ten-week workshop at Britannia Community Centre in which participants will produce a real, living four-page supplement to The Republic of East Vancouver newspaper built around the theme of opposition to provincial plans for expansion of Highway One.
Those who sign up for the workshop will immediately be thrown directly into the live process of publishing a real newspaper, from planning through execution to distribution. Participants will act as the editorial board of the supplement and will be collectively responsible for writing, soliciting, editing and laying out stories and pictures, selling advertising and raising other funds to cover printing and other costs, and distributing the final product.
Not only will participants have done much to express their community’s opposition to the highway expansion plan, they will also have learned in a real-world, hands-on manner the process by which they can continue to express their opposition to this and other incorrect government policies in the future, by producing well-founded, well-organized independent newspapers, or at the very least, strong supplements to The Republic in the future!
To enroll, go to britanniacentre.org, find “adult” at the top, and scroll down to “activities,” then scan down to “Intro to small publishing.” Or phone 604-718-5800 to enroll in “Intro to small publishing.”
The course begins Wednesday, January 10 at 7pm at Britannia High School, and meets every Wednesday for ten weeks. The fee is $100.
I hope to see you there!

The Republic of East Vancouver masthead
The Republic of East Vancouver supports no party, advocates
for no cause, represents no group, serves no master, and considers
problems with no preconceived notions. We hope to afflict the comfortable,
both materially and intellectually, and comfort the afflicted—of
both kinds as well, and we are trying to do both things at the same
time.
