Dear Republic:

Re: Give love a rest,” issue 149 That's what Michael Nenonen says—give love a rest. Please tell Mr Nenonen that asking people to “give love a rest” is like asking us all to stop breathing but keep living. Nice to see he is still over-thinking everything. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.

—Violeta El Azael, Canada

Dear Republic:

Re: issue 150 Thank you, Kevin Potvin, for leading the quixotic fight against The Gateway project. That’s an awful lot of money to spend twinning a bridge just to reduce road rage in a specific number of commuters. Better to run free busses until, as you say, the price of gasoline shakes things down to a new normalcy. Thanks also to Michael Nenonen for bringing his sound sensibilities to bear on the current Body Works exhibition at Science World. Now I know what I only suspected, that I don’t have to go, and why. That’s the function of journalistic criticism, and why I value Junius on films, too. Also, I always look forward to Jennifer Matsui and her wit and incisiveness, rather than any American writers you might pick up who want to complain emotionally about their government with uninteresting sameness.

—Frank Nugent, Vancouver
