Books we're reading

God and Frozen Desire: The Meaning of Money

Two books about the same thing, really

By Kevin Potvin

God, by Alexander Wough (St Martin’s Press, 2002), and Frozen Desire: The Meaning of Money, by James Buchan (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1997), makes for a lively bedside duo, like the twin poles of the Frankenstein movies with the lightening arcing between them.

In both cases, the intrepid (and highly well-written) authors set off in search of a thing everyone knows and everyone doesn’t know at the same time—God and money.

Both voyages of discovery had me laughing out loud. Both tales are also so remarkably similar that I’m inclined to develop a book outline myself in which money is God, and God money, except that book is already written by others a thousand times.

Frozen Desire can by purchased at Magpie Magazine Gallery on Commercial Drive; God can be borrowed from the Vancouver Public Library.

The Republic of East Vancouver masthead

The Republic of East Vancouver supports no party, advocates for no cause, represents no group, serves no master, and considers problems with no preconceived notions. We hope to afflict the comfortable, both materially and intellectually, and comfort the afflicted—of both kinds as well, and we are trying to do both things at the same time.
