LETTERS
TO THE
REPUBLIC

Too many ads

Dear Republic:

Thought I would tell you how much I appreciate your paper. Even the most far-flung pieces stimulate my thought and that is good.

Also thought I would tell you I do not like the amount (too many) and size (way too big) of the ads on the website. Know you need the money, but . . . .

Thanks once again for a great, stimulating read.

- John William

Torture

Dear Republic:

I had not heard before of this innovative intelligence extraction method whereby you pump a prisoner full of fluid until he wets himself. As CEO of Halliburton, Dick Cheney claimed he was not aware his company was skirting US sanctions to do business with Saddam Hussein (allowing the latter to pocket billions in the oil-for-food fiasco). Now he claims against increasingly damning evidence to the contrary that political/military prisoners being held indefinitely without charge at the US administration’s Guantanamo gulag are treated humanely.

What would it take for Mr Cheney to demonstrate a better grasp of the facts? A few rounds of intravenous water torture?

- Roger Barany
